The short answer
Choose your packaging by working through seven questions: what the product is, how it travels, where it is sold, how premium it should feel, how many you need, what your budget per unit is, and what sustainability goals you have. The answers point directly to the right box type, board and finish.
1. What exactly are you packing?
Note the product's dimensions, weight, shape and fragility. A 50 g serum bottle, a 2 kg appliance and a set of chocolates need completely different structures. Liquids and glass need inserts; heavy items need stronger board or corrugation.
2. How will it travel?
- Courier / e-commerce: corrugated mailer or shipper boxes that survive drops and stacking.
- Bulk to stores: retail cartons packed inside a corrugated master carton.
- Hand-delivered or gifted: rigid boxes and paper bags where presentation matters most.
3. Where will customers first see it?
On a retail shelf, the box must sell — bold front panel, clear product information and shelf-friendly shape. In e-commerce, the outside protects and the inside impresses, so interior printing and a neat unboxing sequence matter more.
4. How premium should it feel?
| Positioning | Recommended packaging |
|---|---|
| Value / mass market | Folding cartons, 1–2 colour corrugated |
| Mid-premium | Full-colour cartons or mailers with matte lamination and one accent finish |
| Luxury | Rigid boxes, speciality papers, foiling, embossing, custom inserts |
5. How many do you need?
Quantity changes the best printing method and the unit price. Short runs and prototypes suit digital printing; larger volumes become far more economical with offset printing. If you're testing a new product, start with a smaller run and scale up once the design is proven.
6. What is your budget per unit?
Set a realistic per-unit target early. The biggest cost drivers are box size, board type, number of colours, finishing and inserts. A good packaging partner will suggest where to spend (the lid or front panel) and where to save (hidden surfaces).
7. What are your sustainability goals?
Kraft board, recyclable paperboard and corrugated packaging with minimal plastic lamination are easy wins. Right-sizing the box also reduces material and shipping emissions.
