How offset printing works
In offset printing, each colour is transferred to a metal plate. The press inks the plate, which transfers ("offsets") the image onto a rubber blanket and then onto the sheet. Colour is built from cyan, magenta, yellow and black (CMYK), with optional Pantone spot colours for exact brand matching.
Once the plates are set up, the press runs at high speed with very consistent colour — which is why offset printing gives the lowest cost per unit on larger quantities.
Best uses for offset printing
- Packaging cartons, box wraps and labels in medium to large quantities
- Catalogues, brochures and magazines
- Corporate stationery printed in bulk
- Any job where brand colours must match exactly across reprints
Getting the most from offset
Supply print-ready files in CMYK with Pantone references for brand colours, include bleed, and approve a proof before production. Grouping several designs or sizes into one print run can also reduce cost.
