What are packaging finishes?
Packaging finishes are processes applied after printing — like foiling, embossing, spot UV, lamination and die cutting — that add protection, texture, shine and a premium feel to packaging.
The main finishes
- Foiling — metallic gold, silver, rose-gold or holographic accents for logos, borders and patterns.
- Embossing / debossing — raised or recessed designs you can feel.
- Spot UV — glossy, slightly raised highlights over a matte base for contrast.
- Lamination — matte, gloss or soft-touch film for protection and feel.
- Die cutting — custom shapes, windows and structural features.
Which finish creates which effect?
| Goal | Best finish |
|---|---|
| Instant luxury | Soft-touch lamination + gold foil logo |
| Tactile, crafted feel | Embossing or debossing on uncoated or textured paper |
| Bold retail contrast | Spot UV over matte lamination |
| Durability & scuff resistance | Gloss or matte lamination |
| Show the product | Die-cut window |
Tips for choosing finishes
Keep finishes focused on key elements — your logo, product name or a signature pattern. Restraint looks more premium than covering every surface. Combine at most two or three effects, and always review a physical sample, because finishes look very different in hand than on screen.
